Philip L. Young, Christian minister, passed away Friday December 13, 2019 at Crawford Memorial Hospital Robinson, IL.  He was born April 26, 1930 at the Young homestead in Honey Creek Township, Crawford County, IL. His parents were Orville Phillip Young and Leatha B. (Akers) Young.  His sisters are Donna L. Young and Patricia Kay Young.

As a boy the family moved to a farm southwest of Oblong where he grew to manhood.

He graduated eighth grade from Smoky Row, a one – room school three miles east of Oblong. His high school years were spent at Oblong Township High School (OTHS) graduating in 1948. He graduated from Lincoln Bible Institute with a Bachelors Degree in Church History.

He is survived by his sisters, cousins and many friends.

It was from the Oblong church Phil learned to love and obey the Lord on May 14, 1944 and from here he left for Lincoln Bible Institute in 1948. His first sermon was on March 19, 1949 at Peoria, Illinois and his first church at Bethany Christian in Fayette County, Illinois.  Very fittingly his last sermon and last ministry were at Bethany Christian Church in Lawrence County, Illinois from 2011-2019.  This concluded 70 years, eight and one-half months of preaching, having missed few Sundays.  Thankfully, he was able to preach the last Sunday before his death.

He held long term ministries also at Bogota, Porterville, Hutsonville, Highland Church of Christ in Robinson (which he started and for which he preached for 7 years), Pleasant Ridge, New Hebron Church of Christ and Falmouth Church of Christ in Jasper County.  He also helped launch several other new churches.

In addition to the above he has held about 450 evangelistic meetings and worked extensively in youth camps (over 100 weeks at Oil Belt) and other rallies and conferences affiliated with Churches of Christ.  During the midst of this he took 7 years to teach Bible, Church History, and Archaeology at St. Louis Christian College.  Throughout the last 50 years he also led 16 trips overseas.  Phil was also director and co-founder of the Wabash Valley Christian Institute, a week-end training program for Christian men now having concluded its 17th session.

Spreading the saving story of Jesus in song and word was his lifetime ambition.  Praise God he was able to do more than 70 years of it!
